Harbour Crossing

Harbour Crossing is a jazz-fusion and jazz-funk set recorded at The Wireless Set in Sydney. David Fennell wrote, arranged and produced it and plays piano, electric piano, synthesizer and glockenspiel, with a band including Col Loughnan on tenor sax and flute, plus Rick Price on bass. Kerrie Biddell sings on Nothin' But The Best and Playing The Game, Wendy Grose on three tracks. The sound is groove-led studio fusion, not straight-ahead jazz.

Fennell came from the UK in 1968 and worked as a session keyboard player and musical director; it's one of his early original albums. Biddell was already a veteran of the Daly-Wilson Big Band and her fusion group Compared to What, and joined the NSW Conservatorium's jazz faculty in 1983; the Sydney Morning Herald called her the first lady of Australian jazz.

Larrikin, founded by Warren Fahey in 1974, was mainly a folk label, so a jazz-funk album was an unusual entry. Little has been written about the record itself; Michael Foster reviewed it in The Canberra Times jazz column in September 1983.
