These are four of the keyboard concertos Johann Christian Bach published as Op. 7 in London in the 1770s, the work of the youngest of J.S. Bach's sons and the one Mozart learned from. Each runs to two movements, an Allegretto or Allegro followed by a minuet or rondo, and they are graceful, lightly scored pieces for keyboard and strings rather than grand statements.
Luciano Sgrizzi (1910–1994) plays a Neupert fortepiano. The Bologna-born harpsichordist and organist settled in Switzerland, worked for Swiss-Italian Radio in Lugano until 1974 and was a leading figure in the Italian early-music revival; the Swiss Historical Dictionary records that his discs won seven Grands Prix du disque. Michel Corboz directs the Ensemble Instrumental de Lausanne, the group he recorded with extensively for Erato. The sessions were held on 23–24 November 1974 at the Salle du Casino in Vevey.
Little critical comment is documented on this particular disc, though Erato kept it in the catalogue and Warner Classics reissued it digitally in 2023, remastered from the original tapes and noting the concertos' melodic charm. The 1976 French pressing on Erato's STU series was also licensed to Musical Heritage Society in the US as MHS 4078.
